Club Paddle Schedule - 2009

Club Paddle Trip Policy

1. On official LowCountry paddler trips, participants must either be an ACA member and supply their ACA number OR sign a liability waiver and pay a $5 per paddler fee. The fees are forwarded to the American Canoe Association. Waiver forms are available on the club’s website and we request you download it, read it and complete the waiver prior to arriving at the check in point.

2. If you have not previously paddled with the club, please contact the trip leader prior to the paddle to discuss equipment needed and required skills.

3. When the club meets at a boat landing, paddlers must be there by the meeting time, not the underway time. Trip leaders have the authority to deny your paddling with the club if you are not present and ready to paddle at the time of the safety lecture. Please do not put them on the spot. You must be ready to get in the water at the underway time.

4. Paddlers are encouraged to meet at the boat landings in order to lessen the impact of a large group moving through an area. We will offer the option to meet at a central location for “hard to find” landings. If you know where a landing is, please plan to meet there, rather than the central location.

5. The LowCountry Paddlers Club does not arrange for boats or safety gear. Visitors and new members without gear need to contact a club member or rent from a local outfitter.

6. Because of safety concerns, children under 14 are only permitted the club picnic.

7. “Show and go” trips are not club sponsored events. The club only acts as a communication medium between paddlers for “show and goes”.

9. During most months, we will have an intermediate trip on the first Sunday and third Saturday of the month. We will have a “regular” trip on the second Sunday and fourth Saturday. Paddlers need to check the club’s web page to confirm paddle dates.

Regular trip: Horseshoe Creek loop trip. Approximately 9 miles.

This trip is excellent for beginners.

Regular trip: Wadboo Creek, Upstream into Francis Marion Forest. 6 miles.

Rec boats under 13 feet are not acceptable for this trip.

Regular trip : East Branch of Cooper River: Quenby Landing to Huger Landing loop trip. 8 miles.

High Tide at Quenby Landing is at 10:00 AM. Tidal range is about 3 feet. Meet at Quenby Bridge boat landing at 9:30 and launch at 9:45. Paddle to Huger Landing, take a break, and return.

This trip is excellent for beginners.

Intermediate trip: Wando River : Paradise Island to Remleys Point. 16 miles.

Rec boats under 13 feet are not acceptable for this trip.

It is low tide at Remleys Point at 5:00 PM. Meet at new Wal-Mart on Porchers Bluff Road at 10:00 and proceed to Paradise Island . Offload boats and shuttle cars. Underway about 11 AM.

Regular trip: Combahee River : Yemassee to Sugar Hill Landing. 10.5 miles.

Intermediate trip: Garris Landing to North End of Bull Island loop trip. Approximately 8 miles.

Boats must be over 13 feet long and skirts need to be carried.

DIRECTIONS TO SPARKLEBERRY SWAMP

NOTICE - previously planned intermediate trip has been combined with regular trip!

ALL paddlers: Meet Mike Melton, the caravan leader, at the I-95 rest area just past town of Santee and west of Charleston at 8:15 a.m.. His cell is (843) 847-1444. He will be driving a Dark Gray Toyota Tundra Truck.  His boat will be Red, and he expects to have a Blue/white and a Wooden boat with him, with all three hanging out the back of his truck. Leave the rest area on I-95 at 8:30. Launch in the swamp at 9:15.

Low tide at Otter island is 2 PM. Meet at the Dawhoo Boat Landing—immediately after crossing the Intra Coastal waterway on to Edisto Island at 9:15 AM and LEAVE for Live Oak Landing at 9:30.

Campers and other “early birds" will off load boats at Givhans Ferry and take shuttle vehicle to Long creek landing. Leave at the Givhans ferry landing at 8:30. All others come straight to Givhans ferry. Launch at 9 AM.

Intermediate trip: Weeks Landing at Colleton State park to Givhans Ferry State park. 20 miles.

Campers leave as many shuttle vehicles at Givhans as possible and double load boats at 8:30. Everyone meet at Weeks landing at 9:15 and launch at 9:30.

Regular and Intermediate: CLUB PICNIC. Lake Marion: Spires Island to Church Island--- picnic. It is a short paddle to the island, but there are many places to explore after arriving at the island.

Note: we need a few people to volunteer to camp out on Friday night to “reserve” the section of the beach where we will picnic.

It is low tide in Beaufort at noon. We will immediately shuttle to Brickyard Landing. The paddle will go past downtown Beaufort and then up the intercostal waterway past the Marine Air Station to Brickyard landing.

Leave the BP gas station in Bonneau –just in city limits—on left hand side of the road at 9 AM and leave at 9:15. Proceed to limited parking boat landing, Offload boats and move cars.

High Tide at McConnells at 3:45 PM. Return paddle will be against a small tidal flow. Meet at True Value/Shell gas station on HWY 17 and 45 in McClellanville at 8:30; leave at 8:45.

Regular trip: Dawhoo and Edisto Rivers. Approximately 9 miles.

To get to Dawhoo Boat Landing: take Hwy 17 towards Savannah past Ravenel. Turn left on 174 toward Edisto Beach. Follow 174 until you cross over the Dawhoo bridge and the landing is on the right just after crossing the bridge.

Meet at Rivers Country Store in Santee at 8:30 and launch at Low Falls Landing by 9:00. Take left from I-95 exit ramp toward Santee State Park. Rivers Country Store is on right just after last light. There is a canoe mounted on the side of the roof facing the light.

Regular trip: Santee State Park across the lake to circumnavigate Persanti Island before heading home. Approximately 8 miles. Trip rating:*

Launch from Santee State park boat landing by the campground at 9 AM. Trip time is about 4 hours.

Meet at Shem Creek boat landing at 8:45 and launch at 9. It is low tide at 12:30.

Intermediate trip:  Paddle approx. a 12 mile loop in the area of Sandy Island in  Litchfield Beach.  Put in at Sandy Island Landing in Litchfield Beach and paddle across the Waccamaw (Intercoastal Waterway) to the southern end of Sandy Island.  Go up Guendalose Creek out to the Great Pee Dee and loop back down Thoroughfare Creek.  Portions of the paddle will be against the tide and this can make paddle time four to five hours, not including breaks.  Near the end of the paddle we will stop at the unique high sand area of Sandy Island.

Meet at Sandy Island Landing at 9:30.  Launch by 10:00. The landing is off Hwy. 17 on Sandy Island Road.  Turn at the second left after the North Litchfield traffic light.  You might not even notice the first left so look for the sign that says Sandy Island.  The sign is exactly at the turn-off so no warning.   (This is before Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park .)  Follow Sandy Island Rd. all the way to the end.

Regular trip: Ashley River - Oakbrook (Jessen landing) upstream and back. Approximately 8 miles. Trip rating:*
