Hello, Low Country Paddlers!
LCP Members, John and Brooke Gabris, would like to tell you more about two amazing places to put into your kayaking Bucket List! The Apostle Islands and Pictured Rocks are two known wonderful
kayaking spots of the Northern Midwest on Lake Superior.
In the summer of 2025, we are going to be campground hosts once again up at Little Sand Bay Campground, overlooking the amazing Apostle Islands in Bayfield, Wisconsin.
Having kayaked both of these areas, we would be happy to help you create your trip. The best time of the summer would be the second half of July until October. This way, you avoid a lot of the mosquitoes and black flies.
The Apostle Islands are an archipelago of Islands near Bayfield, Wisconsin, on Lake Superior. These islands are the kayaking mecca of the Midwest and are known for their mainland sea caves as well as sea caves on several of the islands. Folks can camp or get a hotel room on the mainland, or they can camp on many of the islands. Often, kayakers kayak to several islands during their trip. There are also many outfitters that you can link up with a day trips or overnight trips. If experienced, you can do day and overnight trips on
your own.
There are many things you can do while at these kayaking spots, which include hiking, biking, viewing Northern lights, sailing, taking tours, dining, visiting waterfalls, shopping, and walking around in these adorable small towns. An ideal trip would be to spend a few days kayaking up at Pictured Rocks in Munising, Michigan, then drive 5 hours and spend another few days kayaking at the Apostle Islands, Bayfield, Wisconsin.
Here are three popular kayak day trips at the Pictured Rocks
1. Pictured Rocks
2. Miners Castle
3. Grand Island
Here are some popular kayak trips at the Apostle Islands
1. Mainland Sea Caves
2. Sand Island Sea Caves/light house
3. Devils Island Sea Caves/lighthouse (long mileage day)
4. Raspberry Island Lighthouse
5. Shipwrecks
6. Seastack
7. Lighthouses
The paddles are on Lake Superior, so the Lake is the Boss! We usually suggest a minimum of 14ft kayaks with sealed compartments, wetsuit or drysuit, sprayskirts, and all the safety equipment and marine radios.
